Wellington High School Band Excels

The “Mighty Wolverine Sound” Band Program is having another exciting year!

Our band members and staff worked hard to bring you great musical entertainment during the fall 2013 football games.  Our halftime show was titled “Rained Out”!  You heard “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “Singin’ In The Rain,” and “Over The Rainbow,” with our drumline providing a thunderstorm in the middle!  We know you enjoyed hearing these wonderful standards!

We also premiered our brand new uniforms this year!  The 2013-14 school year was a memorable one for our band, due in great part to the long-awaited purchase of these beautiful uniforms after 15 years of fundraising.  They were made possible through the generosity of so many in our community, especially William and Cyndie Wilson in memory of Scott Wilson, and Mark Bellissimo of One Wellington.  We are eternally grateful to everyone who donated towards our uniform replacement fund.

Here are some highlights from the 2013-2014 school year:

The Marching Band earned the school's 21st overall Superior rating at the Florida Bandmasters Association District Marching Assessment, held at Santaluces High School on October 26th.  The band earned Superiors in every judged category, with 17 A’s and only 1 B from the adjudicators.

Wellington High School had 5 students selected by audition for the Palm Beach County All-District Jazz Bands this year. Seniors Robbie Harter, Joey Hempfling, and Jason Smith, and sophomores Michael Cesta and Eric Jansen, performed with the best jazz students in Palm Beach County in a concert hosted by Wellington High School on November 7th.
Our Wind Ensemble was delighted to present its 1st Annual “Salute to Veterans” Concert on Veterans Day, November 11th.  We look forward to making this another great tradition at Wellington High School!
The WHS Band Program had 4 students selected for the Tri-State Honor Bands, which performed at Florida State University on December 8th.  These bands featured the top 400 band students from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.  Congratulations to seniors Robbie Harter, Joey Hempfling, and Jason Smith, and junior Zach Landress, on earning this honor.

The WHS Band program had 1 student selected for the Florida All-State Band – sophomore tuba player Christian Jansen performed with the High School Honor Band in Tampa in January.

In January, 9 of our members were selected by audition to perform in the 2014 Palm Beach County All-District Band.  This event was also hosted by our band and the Wolverine Band Boosters Association in the WHS Theater January 23-24.  Congratulations to seniors Robbie Harter and Joey Hempfling; juniors Zach Landress, Mike Leatherman, and Victor Lucena; and sophomores Michael Cesta, Christian Jansen, Miqueas Paredes, and Evan Sponder on being recognized with the finest musicians in the county.

On February 6-8, 116 members of the Mighty Wolverine Sound Band performed in the District Solo/Ensemble Assessment.  Our band members earned a total of 142 Superior medals!  The following band students earned Superior ratings in Solo Performance:  freshmen Shaye Deegan, Mitch Gulkis, Macrae Reilly, and Hannah Schoenfeld; sophomores Marissa Creekmore, Toni Deaver, Kelly Gerboc, Miranda Holt, Amber Jaremko, Evelyn Kassel, Emily Newsome, and Zachary Shane; juniors Celine Chasteen, Paolo Dumancas, Victoria Flora,; and seniors Adam Clarke, Thomas Davis, Robbie Harter, Joey Hempfling, Sarah Holt, Dalia Matari, Angela Mozdzierz, and Alex Pollack.  Also, the following groups earned Superior ratings in Ensemble Performance: Jazz Band 1, the Majorette Ensemble, the Symphonic Band Woodwind Choir, the Symphonic Band Brass Choir, the Oboe Duet, both of our Jazz Combos, the Sax Trio, a Flute Duet, the Trumpet Duet, a Brass Quintet, a Trombone Trio, a Tuba Duet, the Horn Quartet, the Brass Quartet, the Trombone Quartet, and a Percussion Choir.

Congratulations to the members of the Wellington High School Band’s Majorette Squad who competed in the TwirlMania International Baton Twirling Competition, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, on February 14-16.  Our Majorettes won the Disney Parade Competition for the 4th year in a row, earned 2nd place in Twirling Corps, and 3rd place in Show Corps.

Congratulations to the members of the Wellington High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, who performed in the District High School Music Performance Assessment on March 11 and 12, and hosted the entire assessment in our Theater along with the Wolverine Band Boosters.  Our Symphonic Band earned straight Excellent ratings.  Our Wind Ensemble was the only high school band in the entire district assessment to earn straight Superior Ratings, and qualified for the State Band Assessment in May.  Congratulations also to junior Zach Landress, who earned a Superior rating in Student Conducting.

On April 24th our 2 Jazz Bands presented their 2nd annual “Jazz Under the Stars” Spring Concert at the Wellington Amphitheater.  The Wellington Landings Middle School Jazz Band joined our groups in this performance.  A bake sale was held and donations collected during the event to benefit the band’s scholarship programs, but admission was free!

On May 6th in the WHS Theater, the entire band program presented “Surround Sound 4.0,” a 360-degree concert experience.  This concert featured all genres of music – pop, rock, classical, jazz, etc. - much of it composed or arranged by WHS band members.

Our band program continues to shine, even with ever-increasing budget cuts to our schools, because of the tremendous community support we receive.  The WHS Band members have represented your Western communities with great honor and pride throughout the United States.  However, in order to sustain our music program, we need your help.  Please support the fundraisers sponsored by the Wolverine Band Boosters Association throughout the year, to insure that these outstanding students have every opportunity possible.  Whether stopping by one of our car/dog washes, purchasing a candy bar/coupon book/poinsettia, sponsoring a band student during our annual play-a-thon, or attending our scholarship dinner, every little bit helps.

To help support the Wellington High School Band, the Wolverine Band Boosters Association has a corporate sponsorship program.  Sponsorship rewards are available for donations as small as $50.00.  Click here for more information and a sponsorship form.

We look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence in performance at the district, state, and national level.  The WHS Band members and staff sincerely thank the entire Wellington community for its continued support.
